Prices and exchange rates

Where the price of each movement comes from, how USD becomes EUR or GBP, and what a stale price is.

Every movementOne asset going into or out of one of your accounts. A transaction has one movement per account and asset. has a value: its amount times the price of its token at that moment. Conta Finance stores prices in USD. It then turns them into your reporting currency with the exchange rate of the day.

Where a price comes from

A token gets its prices in one of these ways.

SourceHow it works
The price of each hourEvery hour, Conta Finance records the USD price of each token in the catalog. It also fetches the price of the hour of each new movement.
The price in an imported fileWhen you import a ledger with Use the prices in the file on, the movements keep the prices the file states. See Import a ledger.
A price added by handYou type the USD price of one token at a moment. It fills the movements of that token in the same hour. See Fix a token with no price.
A followed tokenThe token takes the prices of the token it follows. It keeps its own balances and its own cost basis.

Prices are kept by the hour, in UTC. A movement at 14:37 UTC takes the price of the hour of 14:00.

A tokenOne coin, such as USDC, with each platform it lives on, such as Ethereum and Base. Its platforms share one price, one symbol and one name. shares one series of prices. When a coin lives on several platformsWhere an asset lives: a blockchain or an exchange., Conta Finance prices it once, and every platform of the token reads the same price. See Tokens on several platforms.

An ignored token gets no new prices.

When there is no price

Some tokens have no price: small tokens, receipt tokensA token a protocol gives you for a deposit. It stands for the assets inside the protocol. of DeFi protocols, spam. A movement of such a token has no value. It shows No price, and the figures that need it are not complete. Conta Finance never guesses a price.

To find and fix these tokens, see Fix a token with no price.

The reporting currency

The reporting currency is the currency of every balance, valuation and report of the organizationOne company with its own books, its own data and its own address.. It is USD, EUR or GBP. A person with Full access chooses it in Organization settings.

Conta Finance turns USD into EUR and GBP with one exchange rate per day:

  • A movement uses the rate of its own day, so its value in EUR or GBP does not change with today's rate.
  • The rates are published on business days only. A weekend or a holiday uses the last rate published on or before that day.
  • When the rate of a day is missing, the value in EUR or GBP is not known. A table shows a dash. The Portfolio page shows a warning that starts with "No FX rate for", and its net worthThe value of everything your organization holds: the account holdings plus the DeFi positions. A value in both counts once. falls back to USD.

When you add a price by hand, the window also asks for the EUR and GBP rates of that day. Recover EUR/GBP fills them for you.

Cash in EUR or GBP on an exchange is valued with the same daily rates. Cash in a currency that has no rate stays with no price.

Current prices and stale prices

The current price of a token is its latest recorded price, if that price is not more than one day old. An older price is stale.

Conta Finance does not use a stale price as a current price:

  • The Tokens page counts the token with no price.
  • The Gains & losses page marks it Price stale. Its market value and its unrealizedThe gain or loss on what you still hold: market value minus cost basis. It is on paper only. P&L are not computed. See Fix what needs attention.
  • The values of past movements do not change. They use the price of their own hour.

On the Positions page, stale means something else: the last fetch of the positions of an account failed. See The Positions page.

When a price changes later

A price you add by hand fills a gap. It never overwrites a price that already exists for that token and that hour, or a rate that already exists for that day.

When a token starts to follow another, its current price changes at once. The values of its past movements change on the next recalculation.

Decimals are for display

The Decimals field of a token only changes how its amounts are written. Every transfer carries its own scale, so the decimals of the catalog change no amount and no value. Left blank, the catalog stores 18. To read how the app writes numbers, see How numbers are written.
