Rescan the history of an account

Read the history of an account again from the start, to recover movements that are missing from the ledger.

Conta Finance reads new transactions of your accounts by itself. You do not need to rescan an account to keep it current. Rescan history is for a different case: a movement that should be in the ledger and is not.

What Rescan history does

Rescan history reads the whole history of the account again, from its first transaction. It adds only the movements that are missing. A movement that is already in the ledger is never added twice.

An address is often tracked on several blockchains. An EVM address, for example, is the same account on Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum. Rescan history reads every blockchain where the address is tracked.

It does not change a category, a price or a movement that is already there.

When to use it

  • Reconciliation shows a mismatchA difference between the balance in your books and the balance on the platform, larger than the tolerance., and you think a transaction is missing. See Fix a balance mismatch.
  • You see a transaction on the block explorer that is not in Transactions.
  • A balance on the account page does not match the balance on the blockchain.

If the balance still differs after the rescan, the cause is something else. See Why a balance differs from on-chain.

Rescan an account

  1. Open Accounts in the sidebar and select the account.
  2. Select Rescan history in the header.

The button turns into a spinner while the rescan runs. You can keep working.

The rescan can take a few minutes on a busy account.

Follow the rescan

While it runs, a notice at the top of every page says Rescanning an account from the start of its history. See Background tasks.

When it finishes, a message tells you what it found:

MessageMeaning
No new transactions.Nothing was missing.
Recovered … movements. The rescan added that many movements.
Recovered … movements on … blockchains. The rescan read that many blockchains and added that many movements in all.

The page reloads by itself with the new movements. Cost basis and reconciliation take them into account.

Wait 15 minutes between two rescans

A rescan reads a full history. For that reason, you can rescan an account one time every 15 minutes. The limit belongs to the account: it is the same for every person of the organization and for every blockchain of the address.

  • During the 15 minutes, Rescan history is disabled. Hold the pointer on the button to see the minutes that are left. The button comes back by itself.
  • While a rescan of the account runs, the button shows a spinner for every person who has the page open. Conta Finance does not start a second one.
  • After a rescan that failed, you can run it again immediately.

A second rescan a few minutes after the first one finds nothing more. New transactions arrive by themselves.
