Contract deposits

How Conta Finance counts an asset you send into a contract that still holds it for you, such as a staking bond.

Some contracts hold an asset for you. A node operator of a staking protocol sends a bond into the protocol, and the protocol gives it back later. A loan takes a collateral and returns it when the loan is repaid. The asset leaves your wallet, but it is still yours.

Conta Finance cannot tell this from a payment or a sale by itself. The category Contract deposit tells it.

What the category changes

Give the category Contract deposit to the movement that sends the asset into the contract, and to the movements that bring it back from the same contract.

  • The deposit is not a disposalAn asset leaving your portfolio, by a sale, a swap or a payment. It consumes lots.. It consumes no lotOne acquisition of an asset: how much came in, when, and at what cost. and realizes no gain or loss. The asset stays in your cost basis at its first cost.
  • What comes back is matched with what you deposited in that contract, for that token. Up to that amount, it is the deposit coming back: no gain and no new lot. What comes back above it is income: a new lot at the price of that day.
  • A short return leaves the rest open. If 90 come back of a deposit of 100, the other 10 stay in the contract for Conta Finance.

The deposit is matched by contract and by token. An asset that comes back from a different contract is not matched with it.

stETH keeps earning in the contract

stETH grows every day. When you deposit stETH into a contract, it keeps growing there. Conta Finance credits that growth to the wallet that made the deposit, one movement per day, of the type deposit_yield. Each one is income at the price of that day, the same as the daily growth of the stETH in the wallet.

These movements do not change the balance of the wallet: the stETH is in the contract, not in the wallet. When the deposit comes back, the growth already counted is part of what the contract holds, so it is not counted again.

Conta Finance calculates the growth from the stETH you sent into the contract. If the contract adds a reward or takes a penalty by itself, the difference shows when the deposit comes back.

See the deposit in Positions

While a deposit is open, it shows on the Positions page and in the Locked figure of the account page, at the latest price. Hover over its kind to see where it comes from, the ledger: no provider reports it, Conta Finance counts it from your movements. The contract is named by its contact. If it has none, it shows its address: select the pencil beside the address, on the contract's row, to give it one.

If a provider such as DeBank already reports the same contract, Conta Finance shows the provider's position only, so the money counts once.

Close a deposit that will not come back

If less comes back than you deposited, the rest stays open. When you know it will not come back, close it:

  1. On the Positions page, open the contract and select the padlock of the deposit, at the end of its row (Close deposit).
  2. Enter the amount and the date.
  3. Select what happened:
    • It is lost: a penalty or slashing. Conta Finance books a loss equal to the cost of that amount.
    • It came back another way: it reached another account or an exchange. There is no gain or loss. Give the movement that brought it back the category Internal transfer.

Closing adds one movement to Transactions. To undo it, delete that movement. The date cannot be before the last movement of the deposit.

After part comes back, if the rest does not move for 30 days, the position says so, to remind you to check it.

Give the category

  • Select the movements and categorize them. See Categorize movements.
  • For a contract you deposit into often, write a rule on its address. The rule catches the deposits and the returns. See Create a rule.

Contract deposit is a system category: you cannot rename it or delete it. To keep a name of your own, such as Collateral Deposit, give it as a subcategory.
