Subcategory rules

Give movements a subcategory automatically, for example to tell one kind of gas from another, without changing their category.

A subcategory rule gives a subcategoryA second, free label for your own analysis. It changes no figure. to each movementOne asset going into or out of one of your accounts. A transaction has one movement per account and asset. that matches its conditions. A subcategory is a second label for your own analysis. Cost basis does not read it, so it changes no figure. To learn how categories, subcategories and tags differ, see Categories, subcategories and tags.

What subcategories are for

Use a subcategory to split one category into parts you want to read apart. For example:

  • the gas of trading against the gas of payroll, while both stay Fee;
  • the payments to each supplier group, while all stay Supplier payment;
  • the rewards of each validator, while all stay Staking reward.

Most movements have no subcategory. That is normal.

Before you start

You need Read and edit access to the organization.

Create a subcategory rule

  1. Open Rules in the sidebar and select the Subcategories tab.
  2. Select New subcategory rule.
  3. In Rule name, type a name that says what the rule catches.
  4. In Subcategory it assigns, pick a subcategory. To make a new one, type its name and select the Create line.
  5. Under Conditions, add one or more conditions.
  6. Read the preview, then select Create rule.

The form is the same as for a category rule: the same conditions, groups and preview. See Create a rule.

Conta Finance runs the rule over your whole history when you save it. It also applies to every new import. A new rule runs last. To change where it runs, move it in the list. See The Rules page.

Label gas with a subcategory

Gas always has the category Fee, and nothing can change it. A subcategory rule can still label gas, because the category stays Fee.

  1. Create a subcategory rule, for example "Trading gas".
  2. Add the condition Type and pick gas.
  3. Add a second condition that tells this gas apart, for example Wallet with your trading account.
  4. Select Create rule.

You cannot categorize a gas movement by hand on the Transactions page. A subcategory rule is the way to label gas.

Subcategory rules run on their own

Subcategory rules and category rules never compete. Each kind runs its own order:

  1. A subcategory set by hand on the movement wins first.
  2. Then the subcategory rules run in the order of the Subcategories tab, from the top of the list to the bottom.
  3. The first subcategory rule that matches assigns its subcategory.
  4. If no subcategory rule matches, the movement has no subcategory.

So one movement can get its category from one rule and its subcategory from another. A subcategory rule never hides a category rule, and a category rule never hides a subcategory rule. This is why the Subcategories tab numbers its rules from 1.

On the same tab, the Labelled by rules tile counts the movements that got a subcategory from a rule.

Pause or delete a subcategory rule

When you pause or delete a subcategory rule, its movements lose that subcategory. Their category does not change. The next subcategory rule that matches them gives its own subcategory, if there is one. See Pause, edit and delete rules.

A rule cannot change its kind. To turn a subcategory rule into a category rule, create the new rule, then delete the old one.
